The results are in!

Andrew Bonner, aged 41 and a tenant with Mencap’s Supported Living Service in Omagh, has clinched the prize for designing the 2016 Mencap Marathon Sock!

Andrew’s winning design (pictured above) will now go into production and will be showcased at Belfast Fashion Week in March 2016.

A pair of socks featuring Andrew’s design will then be provided to each person participating in Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon for Mencap.

Part of the Fit Fashion Feet competition, Andrew’s entry, which cleverly and colourfully incorporated the Mencap hashtag #doit4mencap, was chosen from a number of styles and designs sent in by members of the public and design students,

Cathy Martin, Director of Belfast Fashion Week, picked the winning design and said; “There were a few really great efforts submitted as part of the Fit Fashion Feet process, but I liked Andrew Bonner’s version best.

“It was very colourful, should photograph well and I’m really looking forward to seeing the final version after the sock is made.”

Mencap’s Geraldine McGurk, Team Manager for Lifestyle Support, said Andrew was delighted when she passed on the news his design had been successful, adding; “He really was over the moon!

“Myself and my collegue Emma Tilson gave some of our beneficiaries the templates for the socks and left them to it – Andrew has moderate learning disabilities but he loves art and he came up with the design himself.

“At present, Andrew is in training to participate in some 5K walks and he is hoping to take part in the Belfast marathon next Spring.

“I’ve no doubt this will be a serious motivator for him – he will love to see everyone wearing the sock he designed on the day.”
