Return to Mencap Northern Ireland
Posted on 01 Nov 01 Nov

The team at David Lloyd Club Belfast is joining forces with learning disability charity Mencap to help runners of all abilities get set for the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon in May.

Following the announcement of Mencap as the official charity partner for the event, the David Lloyd Club Belfast team has signed on to a variety of activities to help promote the charity, including offering free 14-day passes to anyone who signs up for the marathon or its associated events in aid of Mencap between now and December 31st 2016.

Three personal trainers have also agreed to help Mencap’s first learning disability relay team get ready for Marathon Day. The trainers aim to work with the relay team members who are part of the Falcons running club, a new programme affiliated with Belfast Running that is open to runners with a learning disability and their friends and family.

Michelle O’Neill, Sales and Marketing Manager, David Lloyd Club Belfast, said:

“This will be our second year partnering with Mencap ahead of the marathon and we’re doing it bigger and better this time! In addition to free gym passes and personal training sessions, we will be raising money for Mencap through our staff relay and member relay teams. We will also be blogging about training tips and sharing ways to stay motivated to help anyone who is training for the marathon or relay.

“The work Mencap does for children with a learning disability and their families in Belfast is truly inspiring and we can’t wait to get started doing all we can to support the charity ahead of Marathon Day. We encourage runners and walkers of all abilities and fitness levels to support Mencap this year and we hope our free gym passes and fitness tips make their training even better.”

Leah McCourt, Fundraising Co-Ordinator, Mencap added:

“We would like to thank everyone at David Lloyd Club Belfast for committing to raising money for Mencap and promoting our cause ahead of the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon.  At Mencap, we believe anyone of any ability can get involved in the marathon and its associated events and we are grateful to the team at David Lloyd Club Belfast for helping us spread this message.

“Money raised from the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon will fund a variety of new initiatives, such as our upcoming family support programme which will provide bespoke guidance for families with a young child with a learning disability. The 2016 marathon helped us raise enough money to launch the programme, but we urgently need funds to keep it running and help us meet our goal of reaching as many children and families across Northern Ireland as we can.

“We hope the great support from David Lloyd Club Belfast’s staff and members encourages others to ‘Step Up for Mencap’ this year and we can’t wait to see everyone in May!”
