Return to Mencap Northern Ireland
Posted on 12 Mar 12 Mar

Children’s charity Cash For Kids assembled Downtown Radio and Cool FM’s ‘mightiest heroes’ this week at Belfast’s iconic City Hall. The ‘MARVEL-lous’ caped crusaders joined forces to call on the citizens of Northern Ireland to run the Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon in aid of Cash For Kids ‘Superhero Day.’

Cash for Kids Superhero Day is one of the charity’s biggest campaigns of the year, and takes place on-air with Downtown Radio and Cool FM just after the marathon, from 6-8 May. This year, Cash for Kids will donate all funds raised from their ‘Superhero Day’ to Mencap NI’s ‘Big Step Forward Appeal,’ which is fundraising to build, equip and run Mencap’s new Children and Families’ Centre in Northern Ireland.

Cash for Kids Charity Manager Stephanie Laverty explained, “Cash for Kids Superhero Day is a massive day of fundraising for both stations and this year we’re calling on people across Northern Ireland to get sponsored to wear their favourite superhero costume to work, school or even when doing the weekly shop

“As well as helping us support Mencap Northern Ireland by being a hero on Cash for Kids Superhero Day, we’re calling on super men and wonderful women to join us at the Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon in their best cape and cowl. We want to see a legion of lycra-clad superheroes with us in the fun run or as part of a relay team to raise money and show their support for Cash for Kids Superhero Day in aid of The Big Step Forward Appeal.”

Vanessa Elder, Regional Fundraising Manager, Mencap in Northern Ireland said, “We’re delighted that this year all proceeds from Cash for Kids Superhero Day will go to The Big Step Forward Appeal, which is raising vital funds towards our new Children and Families’ centre on the site of the former Newtownbreda Primary School in Belfast.

“The new Children and Families’ Centre is an ambitious and important project for Mencap in Northern Ireland. The Centre will encourage the development and independence of children and young people with a learning disability, as well as providing their families with the emotional and practical support they need. This support from Cash for Kids will provide a ‘super’ valuable boost in helping us reach our goal of opening the centre in January 2016.”

To register your place as an individual Green Lantern in the fun run or as part of a ‘Legion of Superheroes’ in a marathon relay team go to www.coolfm.co.uk/superhero and join Downtown Radio and Cool FM’s first ever Superhero Marathon team today.
