Return to Mencap Northern Ireland

Mencap's Big Step Forward Appeal was the charity’s most successful fundraising appeal to date calling on the public to help raise the £1.7 million it needs to build, equip and run its new Children and Families' Centre, to provide children and young people with a learning disability with the right support and opportunities to flourish and achieve their potential. The appeal surpassed this target raising over £2m in less than 2 years to match £2.5m funding from DHSSPS.

The £4.5m raised was used to build, equip and run (for one year) Mencap's much needed new centre for children with a learning disability and their families in Belfast.

Thanks to Mencap’s Big Step Forward Appeal, March 2016 saw the opening of a brand new purpose-built centre, at the heart of the new centre is Mencap’s nursery for 2 to 4 year-olds with a learning disability, autism and developmental delay, but building Mencap Centre is just the start of what we want to achieve in Northern Ireland.

The funds you raise will support people with a learning disability going forward; as well as funding even more vital services such as;

– Mencap Nursery Early Intervention Service and our new Holiday Play Schemes

– After school clubs and summer play schemes for young people, as well as family - away and respite days across Northern Ireland

– A new family support service which will reach the whole of Northern Ireland - making sure that when any child is born with a learning disability, that their family knows that they can turn to Mencap for information, guidance, advice and support.
