Return to Mencap Northern Ireland

Miss NI 2016, Emma Carswell  a psychology student from Gilford in County Armagh has put her fame to good use by becoming a Mencap Ambassador and joining our Famous Faces Relay Team. Emma tells us why she feels compelled to give something back and help raise awareness of learning disability in Northern Ireland.

1. Why have you decided to take part in 2017’s Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon?

The 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon offers a challenge, an opportunity to better myself, have a little fun and most importantly help children and young people with a learning disability in Northern Ireland by fundraising for Mencap NI.

2.Why have you become an official ambassador for Mencap?  Do you have any personal connections to the charity?

I became a Mencap NI ambassador to help raise awareness and change society’s attitudes toward people with learning disabilities. Many people don’t know or understand the everyday challenges and inequalities faced by families, children and young people with a learning disability but Mencap NI aim to transform just that!

As an ambassador I get to raise vital funds to help Mencap NI continue their wonderful work. Everyday Mencap NI play a crucial role in making a difference to the lives of others throughout the community, improving health for people with a learning disability and giving children the best start in life. What an honour to be a part of it all!

3. Mencap is the official charity partner of the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon. We want to encourage others to get active for Mencap – what reasons would you give other people to encourage them to take on a Marathon challenge and fundraise for Mencap in the 2017 Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon?

Signing up to Belfast City Marathon sounds super scary, but you don’t have to run an entire marathon! Belfast City Marathon offer 5 different events catering for all ages and abilities meaning YOU and your family can #StepUp4Mencap together. Take the plunge and choose from the Marathon Run/ Wheelchair race, Team Relay, 8 Mile Walk, Fun Run, Child Fun Run!

4. What would be your top reason why people should get involved and #StepUp4Mencap and what are your tips for staying active?

Take the leap and #StepUp4Mencap not only for your community, but for yourself! Improve your health, fitness, meet new people and have fun along the way.

Staying active is super easy if you make exercise part of your day. Take the stairs, walk to the shop, schedule an hour out of your day to hit the gym or walk in the park. But make sure you have fun! For me, finding an activity or sport that I enjoy is important. I love swimming and classes like zumba, pilates and spinning. If you enjoy it, you will stick to it!

5. What are your best words of advice for someone who is taking on a big challenge, like the marathon for Mencap?

Signing up to a huge challenge is the exciting part but preparation is super important! Planning your training, building up the miles over time and sticking to your schedule will make running much easier and safer on the day. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to – have fun!
